The second transnational call for proposals from ERA-Net SusCrop is now open with an extended deadline due to the impact of COVID-19 in many countries. SusCrop is an ERA-Net Cofund Action under H2020, which “aims to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in the field of Sustainable Crop Production through enhanced cooperation and coordination of different national and regional research programmes”.
Its second joint call “intends to support scientifically excellent transnational research, development and innovation projects that contribute to the improvement of sustainability (environmental, economic and societal) and resilience of crop production. In addition, the call puts greater emphasis on how projects might contribute to food and nutritional security in the light of climate change.”
SusCrop reports that funding agencies from 12 different countries intend to be part of the call, comprising Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the UK.
The call consists of a two-stage submission procedure and interested researchers should submit their pre-proposals by April 28, 2020.
SusCrop’s first call in 2018 recommended 13 research consortiums for funding. They included, for example, a team led by Germany’s University of Rostock examining the application and combination of disturbance and competition for the agroecological management of creeping perennial weeds.
Additionally, Aarhus University, one of ENDURE’s Danish partners, is coordinating ProFaba, ‘Developing improved Vicia faba breeding practices and varieties to drive domestic protein production in the European Union’, while Dutch partner, Wageningen University, is coordinating ROOT, ‘Resilience to salinity in tomato’.
