ENDURE's first International Conference, Diversifying Crop Protection, in pictures:
The Palais des Congrès (above) in La Grande Motte, southern France, played host to the conference. The first morning's session dealing with issues and challenges for crop protection was opened by Rudy Rabbinge (below left), chairman of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Science Council and University Professor of Wageningen University and Researchcenter, The Netherlands, who provided an overview of global challenges. His presentation focused on what the near future holds for world agriculture and what this means for research on crop protection. |

He was followed by James Brown (above right) project leader at the UK's John Innes Centre who examined biotechnologies. Cliff Ohmart (below left), director of integrated pest management (IPM) at the Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission in California, USA, provided insights into the impediments preventing grower adoption of IPM. Irmgard Hoeschle-Zeledon (below right), coordinator of the CGIAR System-wide Programme on Integrated Pest Management, provided insights on IPM implementation in Africa. |

Claudia Michel (above left), from the European Crop Protection Association, opened Monday afternoon's session devoted to stakeholders' perspectives, followed by Carrefour's Agnès Pondaven (above right), who described the creation and development of Carrefour's Quality Line programme. Michel Guillon (below left), former president of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association, set out the current situation facing the biocontrol industry. Daniel Lesinsky (below right), from Pesticide Action Network - Europe, set out the case for an innovative European-wide participative IPM strategy. |
Conference visitors gathered in the sunshine at La Grande Motte (above left). The Chateau de Pouget (above right) provided a fitting setting for Tuesday evening's gala dinner. Flamenco dancers kept the crowd happy during the gala dinner (below left). Organising committee members Christine Nouaille (CIRAD), Nathalie Curiallet (CIRAD) and Delphine Dominique (Alpha Visa Congrès) smile for the camera (below right). |
A good conference demands technical expertise too. Jean-Pierre Gilles (above left) of CIRAD handled the technical side of the presentations, while Vincent Troillard (above right), ENDURE's European project manager (INRA Transfert), ensured a packed timetable went to schedule. Jean-Louis Sarah (below left), of CIRAD in France and leader of the organising committee, wishes visitors a safe return. ENDURE coordinator Pierre Ricci (below right) told visitors he looks forward to meeting them all again in 2010, when ENDURE will be staging its second international conference. |
