Reducing pesticide use and risk remains high on the agenda of EU Member States, and for the third time since 2007, a Member State has taken advantage of its EU Presidency to organise a policy seminar on the issue. The latest seminar was staged earlier this month by Poland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and focused on ‘Sustainable use of pesticides and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in East-Central Europe and the Baltics.’
While the long-term aim of ENDURE is to reduce agriculture’s reliance on pesticides, in particular through its work examining the redesign of cropping systems and non-chemical alternatives, there is a recognition that short-term progress on reducing the impact of pesticides can be achieved through strategies aimed at optimising their use.
More than 40 participants from 16 countries tackled the topic ‘Crop and Sector Specific Guidelines for Integrated Plant Protection’, the theme of May’s 4th International Symposium ‘Plant Protection and Plant Health in Europe (PPPHE)’ in Berlin, Germany.
ENDURE’s partner from Poland, the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR), is hosting a conference focusing on pesticide risk and use reduction in Eastern and Central Europe and the Baltics this September to mark the Polish presidency of the European Union.
Three new leaflets in French have been published, focusing on maize based cropping systems in four different regions in Europe: Northern Europe, Spain, Italy and Hungary.
Back in November, the heads of 14 ENDURE partner institutions pledged to pool resources to “ensure the sustainability of crop protection in Europe through scientific excellence, interdisciplinary research, and international partnership”, writes Antoine Messéan, ENDURE Coordinator.
A new Collaborative Working Group on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has been established under the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) umbrella. ENDURE welcomes the strategic objectives of this European research agenda setting group.
Denmark is reshaping its agricultural and environmental policies changing the way pesticides will be used in the country. It is introducing a new national target based on environmental impact, a new tax on pesticides and a raft of measures to support the greater use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), including subsidised advice on IPM.
Four new leaflets in French have been published, focusing on winter crops based cropping systems in Denmark, France and the United Kingdom, and strategies to reduce Fusarium ear blight and mycotoxin production in wheat crops.
A new brochure outlining the information, tools and services ENDURE offers to scientists, policy and farm advisers, and trainers concerned with Integrated Pest Management is now available.
