Workshop tackles potato late blight

mei 14, 2010

ENDURE was well represented at the recent three-day workshop of EuroBlight, the potato late blight network for Europe, which tackled a range of issues involving the disease caused by the pseudo-fungus Phytophthora infestans.

Late blight is the most serious disease to affect potatoes and was the focus of ENDURE’s potato case study, which produced four leaflets for advisers and extension services seeking more knowledge on combating the pest (these can be downloaded below).

May’s workshop, held in the French city of Arras, included sessions examining the status of late blight in Europe and beyond, investigations into host/pathogen interactions and characteristics, updates on fungicides, perspectives on pathogen and host resistance, and an examination of control strategies.

Researchers who worked on the potato case study were particularly well represented in a session devoted to epidemiology and late blight models. As reported on this site in November ( Online analysis of late blight DSS), Decision Support Systems can be a major help in making late blight protection more efficient and sophisticated and EuroBlight researchers, with support from ENDURE, have created a freely available platform that allows people to test and compare commonly used weather-based disease models. Go to www.euroblight.net to test it out for yourself.

All the powerpoint presentations from the workshop are now available online on the EuroBlight website.
