A consortium of six of European universities with experience in both general and specific aspects of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is to offer a Masters course in ‘Plant health in sustainable cropping systems’ (known simply as PlantHealth) from September 2016.
Part of the Erasmus+ Programme, 21 places are available on the first PlantHealth course, with students completing their first year at either the coordinating university Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain) or the University of Göttingen (Germany). This first year comprises compulsory modules on fundamental aspects in crop sciences, crop protection, population biology, molecular biology and statistics.
In the second year, students will choose a hosting university from the PlantHealth consortium (other members are France’s Montpellier SupAgro, Agrocampus Ouest and AgroParisTech and Italy’s University of Padova). This will provide students with the chance to specialise in topics which are of particular interest to them and obtain a deeper knowledge of IPM in different agro-ecosystems across diverse climatic zones.
The organisers note: “PlantHealth provides students with an attractive and innovative programme which shall allow them to develop the ability to see plant health in a broad context with a focus on sustainability, taking into account all relevant agronomic factors, like plant variety, nutrition, soil tillage, crop rotation, etc. Students will obtain the skills and knowledge of advanced mycology, virology, entomology, nematology and weed science, to efficiently analyse or diagnose biotic and/or abiotic constraints in productivity of Sustainable Cropping Systems.”
Further details, including fees and scholarships, can be found on the PlantHealth website. Please note that the closing date for applications is March 16, 2016 .
