Fourth German leaflet completes potato series

09, 2010

The fourth and final leaflet in German from ENDURE’s From Science to Field Potato Case Study series is now available online. Widerstandsfähige Sorten gegen die Kartoffelkraut- und Knollenfäule (Using Cultivar Resistance to Reduce Inputs Against Late Blight) reveals the significant role that late blight resistance can play in reducing fungicide inputs as part of an integrated control strategy.

The leaflet was produced as part of ENDURE’s Potato Case Study, which focused on late blight, the potentially devastating disease caused by the pseudo-fungus Phytopthora infestans. ENDURE researchers estimate that the combined worldwide cost of crop losses and treatments (mainly fungicides) for late blight is €4 billion per year, half of this cost incurred in Europe alone.

The series of four guides in the From Science to Field series examines ways to reduce primary inoculum sources, the use of decision support systems (DSS), the fungicides available for tackling late blight and the use of cultivar resistance to reduce inputs. Containing scientifically sound and practical advice for advisers and farmers, the leaflets are available in English and German, and with French and Dutch summaries.
