The MycoKey Horizon 2020 project is to stage an international conference in 2020. Addressing ‘Integrated and innovative key actions for mycotoxin management in the food and feed chain’, the event is being held in Bari, Italy, from March 9 to 12, 2020, and is being organised together with the 2nd International Forum on Mycotoxins in Animal Production and with the participation of the MyToolBox project.
Launched in 2016, MycoKey has been taking a holistic and sustainable approach to address mycotoxin contamination along the food and feed chain, bringing together 32 partners from Europe, China, Nigeria and Argentina, including research institutions, SMEs, industries and associations. It has been focusing on toxigenic fungi and mycotoxin monitoring, and prevention, intervention and remediation.
Its work packages include one dedicated to developing cropping systems “to prevent and reduce the occurrence of toxigenic fungal species and mycotoxins in maize and small-grain cereals”. This has included the selection of Aspergillus flavus atoxigenic strains in order to identify candidate biocontrol agents and determining in different cropping systems (integrated, conventional and organic) “a combination of agronomic practices, e.g. crop rotation, choice of variety, tillage, undersown/cover crops, to reduce Fusarium spp. inoculum and mycotoxins in barley and wheat.”
Alongside plenary sessions, the conference will include:
The organisers report: “The conference aims to be a very important and strategic appointment for all the scientific communities, industries/companies and stakeholders, that operate in the field of the food safety, and it is based on a cross -disciplinary approach, required by the deep evolution of the whole agrifood sector. The programme of the conference will be strongly oriented towards integrated strategies for mycotoxin minimization worldwide including topics on advances in applied research in the food chain, and topics focusing on industrial and networking actions.”
