Lecturers from the USA, Denmark, France and The Netherlands have been lined up for June’s second ENDURE PhD Summer School. Based on the theme ‘Modelling approaches to support integrated pest management (IPM)’, the Summer School takes place in Volterra (Italy) from June 15 to 20 and is being organised by ENDURE member Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa (SSSUP).
The Summer School will host 17 PhD students from 15 different countries and six lecturers. Being a residential course, students will have the chance to deeply interact with lecturers all week long. The six lecturers are:
Students will both follow lectures and work in groups (guided by lecturers) thus having the chance to ‘learn by doing’.
The full Summer School programme is as follows:
Date/time | Theme |
Monday 15 June AM | Overview of modelling approaches for IPM. |
Monday 15 June PM | Students will present their PhD projects. |
Tuesday 16 June AM | Lectures on ‘Parameter estimation, quality of a model and sensitivity analysis’ and ‘Socio-economic aspects of IPM modelling’. |
Tuesday 16 June PM | Team work: students will first discuss about cases proposed by lecturers, then models will be run and students will comment on the results obtained by the models. |
Wednesday 17 June AM | Theoretical lectures on pest-community models, spatial explicit modelling and multi-pest models. |
Thursday 18 June AM | Team work - students will be divided in groups and will work, together with lecturers, on three different topics:spatially explicit modelling for IPM strategies; modelling of weed communities to predict cropping system effects on weed, and multi-pest modelling (using WHEATPEST as an example). |
Thursday 18 June PM | Continuation of morning’s team work. |
Friday 19 June AM | Each group will present results from the previous day’s team work. |
Friday 19 June PM | Discussion on team work results and closure of the Summer School. |
