New Integrated Pest Management (IPM) projects will be launched early next year as the C-IPM (Coordinated IPM) ERA-NET’s first call for projects reaches the final evaluation round.
The prospect of a global fight against late blight in potato is a step closer to reality with Europe’s EuroBlight helping to inspire the creation of a similar network in Asia. The launch of AsiaBlight follows the founding of a network in Latin America (Red Tizon Latina) and could be particularly significant as China and India are now among the largest potato producers in the world.
There is a chance to catch up with progress in the BIOCOMES project (‘New biological products for sustainable farming and forestry’) with the publication of its fourth newsletter. The project, comprising 13 industrial partners and 14 research institutes and universities from 14 countries, is seeking to offer 11 new biological control products for arable, vegetable and fruit tree crops, plus new solutions for forestry and two new production technologies.
A two-day Ecophyto research colloquium is being held in Paris, France, on October 13 and 14, where the outcomes of recently completed research projects aimed at reducing agriculture’s reliance on pesticides will be presented and discussed. The organisers note: “This colloquium will be an opportunity to share the research findings, to assess their relevance to foster the transition towards less pesticide-dependent cropping systems and to identify future research and development priorities.
UK Integrated Pest Management experts have described how IPM – already an interdisciplinary subject – is set to become even more so as the importance of pollinators to agriculture receives greater attention.
A seven-strong team of ENDURE scientists presented ongoing Integrated Pest Management activities in Europe at the 18th International Plant Protection Congress which was held in Berlin, Germany from August 24 to 27, 2015.
An ENDURE team of 17 co-authors has just published a review paper on the European Union's eight principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The paper provides researchers, advisers and farmers with an approach for applying these legal requirements intelligently to promote local innovation while reducing reliance on pesticides and associated risks. The authors hope that interest in this approach may help garner support from European and national policy makers to set incentives promoting IPM extension work, demonstrations, research and implementation.
The first English versions of INRA's Sustainable Management of Crop Health (SMaCH) metaprogramme Information Letters are now available, revealing progress made in the durable management of plant pest resistance, and the launch of new projects addressing the mobilisation of natural regulation, monitoring, diagnosis and predicting risks for crop health.
There is a real prospect of a global attack on potato blight, reports the European EuroBlight network, with the first steps being taken during the group's biennial meeting in Romania in June. Experts from North America, South America and Asia joined their European colleagues at the meeting.
