The first newsletter from SusCrop is now available. SusCrop is an ERA-Net Cofund Action under H2020, which “aims to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in the field of Sustainable Crop Production through enhanced cooperation and coordination of different national and regional research programmes”.
Bringing together the owners and managers of national and regional research, development and innovation programmes of European Union Member States, EU-associated States and third countries with significant experience in research funding and coordination, SusCrop’s first newsletter includes details of the 13 research consortiums recommended for funding as a result of SusCrop’s first transnational joint call for projects.
These projects aim to significantly contribute to the sustainable production of crops. For example, a team led by Germany’s University of Rostock will be examining the application and combination of disturbance and competition for the agroecological management of creeping perennial weeds.
Aarhus University, one of ENDURE’s Danish partners, will be coordinating ProFaba, ‘Developing improved Vicia faba breeding practices and varieties to drive domestic protein production in the European Union’, while Dutch partner, Wageningen University, will coordinate ROOT, ‘Resilience to salinity in tomato’. Two projects will be tackling more sustainable potato production, while others will be seeking to produce better adapted varieties in crops such as barley and maize.
