France's Académie d'Agriculture (Academy of Agriculture) is to focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) later this month, in a session organised by, and featuring, ENDURE speakers. The event, to be held on November 25 in Paris, has been organised by Bernard Blum, leader of ENDURE’s team examining the exploitation of natural biological processes.
The session will start with a lecture by Paul Speight, from the European Commission's Directorate-General Environment, who will discuss European environmental policy and IPM. He will be followed by ENDURE coordinator Pierre Ricci, who will be examining plant protection in the future, and Alain Montembault, scientific and development director of France's large Terrena farmers' co-operative. Bernard, who is head of international affairs at the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association, will conclude the session by examining alternative and biological methods for crop protection.
The Academy, which was founded by King Louis XV in 1761 and includes members from 38 different countries, has a three-fold programme examining the necessary evolution of plant protection and the available or foreseeable methods.
This was launched in May in a joint session with the Académie de Médecine de France (French Academy of Medicine) devoted to pesticides and will conclude with an examination of alternative biological solutions in 2010.
French conference
The IBMA is staging its first conference on integrated protection for French-speaking participants in December. The event, on Thursday December 17, is being held in Paris and will feature Bernard Blum and Jean-Louis Bernard from the Académie d'Agriculture, in addition to farmers and growers working in the fruit, vegetable, cereal and winegrape sectors.
