ENDURE features strongly in the soon to be published International Innovation, an annual research report focused on emerging research and development in the food, agriculture, fisheries and biotechnology sectors.
An overview of the ENDURE project and a wide-ranging interview with coordinator Pierre Ricci will be included in the journal, which also includes insights from Maive Rute, Director of Biotechnologies, Agriculture, Food (Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy) at the European Commission’s Directorate General (DG) for Research and Timothy Hall, Head of Unit for Agriculture, Forests, Fisheries and Aquaculture at DG Research.
In the interview, which can be downloaded below, ENDURE coordinator Pierre Ricci, a Research Director at INRA, France’s National Institute for Agricultural Research, charts the history and progress of the Network of Excellence, and looks ahead to the next decade.
“Building on the success of the last four years supported by EC funding, our member institutions are now pooling their resources to create a permanent European Research Group,’ he told International Innovation. “In the years ahead, our ambition is to become a major resource for our three target audiences - advisers, policy makers and researchers – mobilised through the 27 Member States by the new legislative context.
“We hope to become a central point of scientific and technical reference for advisers and a recognised source of scientific advice to inform policies relevant to Integrated Pest Management (IPM). For the research community, beyond the research tools that we are making available, we want to play a leading role in building momentum on IPM-dedicated research at the European Union level and create synergies from national efforts.”
In the accompanying overview of the project, New ways of dealing with agricultural pests , which can also be downloaded below, the article explores how ENDURE has brought together researchers from across Europe and is seeking to develop innovative, viable and cost-effective farming systems that surmount the environmental problems associated with pesticides.
It examines the legislative background that is changing the way European agriculture is conducted and how ENDURE is helping to match these changes with both short and longer term solutions for farmers and advisers.
Key to this is ENDURE’s commitment to employing a holistic approach to agricultural research, employing a range of scientific expertise, including economists and sociologists, to propose improved farming systems, the efficacy of which is being tested using modelling and multi-criteria assessment tools.
