Diagnostic tools and decision supports for a ‘good’ use of pesticides

Number Resources and tools Context of advisory Usability of the resource Examples
B1 Advising letters, mailings, based on 'forecast and warning' News on plant protection and pests’ development are weekly sent to farmers. More or less, consideration of weather, crop development and economy Newsletters are available from S board of agriculture on the web for free, from advising organizations, from companies at a small cost. Used at least 25 years
B2 Field studies at ordinary farm or demonstration farm or field trials. Networks of annual thematic tests on a specific crop Advisers and farmers involved in relationship with research institutes - in some countries cooperatives’ advisers depend on resources from private enterprises such as Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer etc. Demonstration on effects from different treatments and research of new technical paths: plant species and varieties, mechanical weeding, etc.
Impact of decreasing dose (linear dose response) from full dose till none.
Abstract in English: see Winter wheat cultivar resistance at http://www.inra.fr/ciag/revue/volume_7_novembre_2009
B3 Research on crop system with reduced inputs Technical documents for improving individual advice or seeking new cropping systems Updating of technical knowledge: evaluation of cropping techniques through diagnostic tools French: three videos about research and farms network at: http://draaf.poitou-charentes.agriculture.gouv.fr/Les-films-Ecophyto-2018,448
B4 Individual tools to evaluate risks and profitability of control (booklet, Dose key - tool, software for pesticide management, etc.) Direct use by the farmers is helping to the efficiency of advisory - some ICT applications for farmers are adaptable by the adviser to the situation Final dose is decided by the farmer or contractor when spraying is to be done. The software can record application of pesticides, security deadlines etc. The adviser can introduce and implement the use of ICT for agricultural management Swedish: Small booklet and on the web.
Spanish: AINFOGRA tool is directly used by the farmer. Web address: http://www.ainfogra.com
