The James Hutton Institute, ENDURE’s Scottish partner, staged a Technical Day for Farmers on June 9 this year. Building on the successful event two years ago, the 2016 Technical Day highlighted science and practice around topical issues including soil management and soil conservation, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), nitrogen usage and cycling including N-fixation, precision agriculture and the design of field margins and boundaries.
The James Hutton Institute is a Linking Environment And Farming (LEAF) Innovation Centre and the Technical Day was the main LEAF event in Scotland this year, which marks LEAF’s 25th anniversary. LEAF is the United Kingdom’s leading charity promoting sustainable agriculture, food and farming. It seeks to help farmers produce good food, with care and to high environmental standards, identified in-store by the LEAF Marque logo.
LEAF also seeks to build public understanding of food and farming in a number of ways, such as the annual Open Farm Sunday (this year’s was held on June 5) and year-round visits to its national network of LEAF demonstration farms.
