Here you can find a selection of photographs from ENDURE's 2010 International Conference, IPM in Europe.
IPM in Europe - The ENDURE Network of Excellence shares the fruits of four years’ research with the crop protection community was rather different to a classic conference with interactive workshops, panel discussions and 'market squares', where researchers interacted directly with delegates, creating a truly interactive couple of days. In the following photographs we have tried to capture some of the flavour of the event.
Interacting with policy makers: Marco Barzman, of INRA (above left), who will be the scientific officer for the ENDURE European Research Group, presented five examples of different pesticide action plans, followed by debate amongst a panel including Adrian Dixon (Chemicals Regulations Directorate, UK), Emmanuelle Soubeyran (Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, France), Janos Molnar (Ministry of Rural Development, Hungary) and Tiziano Galassi (Regione Emilia Romagna, Italy). |
ENDURE was delighted to welcome advisers to the event, and covered the travel and accomodation costs of some of them. Above left are some of the advisers, with Jens Erik Jensen and Rolf Thostrup Poulsen of the Danish Agricultural Advisory Service (DAAS). ENDURE's team dedicated to training and advisers took the opportunity to present the tools created to help this sector, which will be essential in turning research advances into a field reality, with Paul van Mele (Agro-insight, Belgium) chairing the session. In a highly successful interactive session, the team staged a range of activities designed to provoke debate, with the World Café giving each delegate the opportunity to have their say on IPM issues. DAAS also used the occasion to collect opinion on the most important components of IPM and each country's progress. The results will be presented in the next Network of Advisers newsletter. |
In one of two sessions addressing Innovation for IPM, ENDURE assmebled a panel of expert representatives from the agrochemical, biocontrol and precision agriculture sectors (top left). Panellists included Bernard Blum, an active ENDURE member and head of various working groups of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (IBMA), IBMA executive director David Cary, Romano de Vivo of Syngenta and Thierry Schoonejans of Dow AgroSciences, representing the European Crop Protection Association. |
A crucial feature of ENDURE has been the bringing together of researchers from different disciplines. From above left, for example, sociologist Claire Lamine (INRA, France), weed expert Per Kudsk (Aarhus University, Denmark), professor of IPM Jozsef Kiss (Szent István University, Hungary) and GMO risk-benefit assessment expert Bernd Hommel (JKI, Germany). |
The conference was a momentous occasion for more than one reason. It marked the public launch of the ENDURE European Research Group, through which ENDURE will continue to develop thanks to the support of 14 institutes (above left). A press conference highlighted this step. It was momentous also for ENDURE coordinator Pierre Ricci, who retires from INRA at the end of 2010 after 40 years. The occasion was marked with the presentation of the INRA medal from INRA president Marion Guillou and words of appriciation from Piet Boonekamp. |
Interactive workshops allowed visitors to see and try the tools created by ENDURE. These sessions were also filmed, with tool creators explaining how they work. From left: Neal Evans (Rothamsted Research) explains the Virtual Laboratory), Niels Holst (Aarhus University) explains UNISim and Per Rydahl (Aarhus University) demonstrates a user friendly Decision Support System for weed control. Finally, one of the plasma screens used for demonstations, this one explores DEXiPM, the ex ante assessment tool. |
The session dedicated to 'IPM the global challenge: ENDURE fosters international collaboration' was very well attended. The conference was brought to a close by Professor Joop van Lentern (IOBC), Patrizia Pitton (DG Sanco) and Olivier Le Gall (INRA). |
And finally...if the cap fits...
Paris is well known for its cutting-edge fashion and high style. November's must-wear accessory was an ENDURE baseball cap, modelled here by Bénédicte Ferreira (INRA Transfert), Bill Clark (Rothamsted Research), Jens Erik Jensen (Danish Agricultural Advisory Service (DAAS)), Philippe Delval (ACTA), Piet Boonekamp (Wageningen UR) and Rolf Thostrup Poulsen (DAAS). |
