As the coordinators explain, the objectives of the project are twofold “We want to gather information on methodological approaches and technical management data for a range of experimental sites where IPM-based cropping system prototypes are tested (mainly arable crops) in order to assess and compare their performances (profitability, workload, productivity, energy efficiency, environmental impacts etc.). This should provide information enabling us to discuss the feasibility and sustainability of these innovative cropping systems, and to highlight the effects of management strategies on cropping system performances.

“The meta-analysis of these cropping system experiments should also help to identify possible antagonisms between reduction in pesticide use intensity and other performance indicators. As cropping system performances are not only determined by these management strategies but also proceed from local production situation, at each site we define a local reference (the most widespread cropping system in a given local production situation) likely to reflect the constraints framework defined by a specific production situation. Each estimated performance for a cropping system is therefore related to the corresponding local reference.

“Secondly, we want to develop sustainable interactions between research units over Europe. Two co-signed scientific papers are expected, the first one dealing with the methodological aspects of carrying out a long-term experiment, comparing factorial analytical approaches with more systemic ones, and the second analysing antagonisms between reduced reliance on pesticides and other indicators of sustainability. All contributors will be involved in the preparation of these papers, with the possibility of creating a freely accessible European database presenting descriptions of experimental devices and technical management operations.”
